Let's talk about the 347..

The SR-347 Commute, Honestly

The 347 is the #1 thing people complain about in Maricopa — so let's be straight about it: how bad it really is, why it backs up, and the workarounds I actually use to beat it.

How bad is it, really?

State Route 347 (John Wayne Parkway) is the main road in and out of Maricopa, running north to Interstate 10 and the Phoenix metro. A normal run on that stretch is about 20–25 minutes. But a heavy rush hour or — heaven forbid — an accident can stretch it to an hour or an hour and a half. During the recent intersection construction (mostly finished now) it occasionally hit two hours. On average there's a wreck a couple times a week, partly because it's a 65-mph road and not everyone moves right after passing (in Arizona the left lane is for passing). A Rigs Road overpass is approved to help, but there's no firm date yet.

How I actually beat it

You've got real options — here's what works:

1. Dodge rush hour. Outside the morning and evening peaks, the 347 is quick and easy. If you can flex your hours at all, do it.

2. Better yet, skip the commute. The folks who win in Maricopa work in Maricopa, own a business here, or work from home. Not everyone can, but it's worth weighing.

3. Know the alternate routes for when it's backed up. Casa Blanca Road cuts across and lets you hop onto the 347 closer to town — a little slower, but fine. Or take I-10 down to Casa Grande and come in on the Maricopa–Casa Grande Highway: it's about 20 minutes longer overall, but 20 extra minutes beats sitting in a 90-minute backup.

4. Always run Waze or Google Maps. On these roads they're usually right, and they'll route you around the worst of it.

5. Use smart cruise control if your car has it — it takes the sting out of stop-and-go. New to the area? Start with the relocation guide.

Commute questions, answered

How long is the commute from Maricopa to Phoenix?

On State Route 347 the main stretch is normally about 20 to 25 minutes, but rush hour or an accident can push it to an hour or an hour and a half. Off-peak it's quick.

Is there another way to Phoenix besides the 347?

Yes. When the 347 is backed up you can cut across on Casa Blanca Road to reach it closer to town, or take I-10 down to Casa Grande and come in on the Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway - about 20 minutes longer but it beats a long backup.

Is the 347 getting better?

An overpass where Rigs Road meets the 347 has been approved to ease delays, though there's no firm timeline yet. The intersection construction that used to cause the worst backups is mostly finished.

Can I avoid the 347 commute entirely?

The people happiest with Maricopa either work in town, run a business here, or work from home. If a daily Phoenix commute is unavoidable, flexing your hours around rush hour helps the most.
