Fall Golf Near Rancho El Dorado: Who's Open, Who's Overseeding, and What Opens Next

October 15, 2026

Since Sept. 27, The Duke has been closed for overseeding. Around Oct. 12, that flips. The Duke at Rancho El Dorado reopens, and on the same day Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club closes for its own overseed.

The two courses closed back to back this year instead of at the same time. If you live in Rancho El Dorado, that means the course at the center of your neighborhood is the one to play for the rest of October. Then the next round of changes shows up: a 24/7 indoor simulator on Smith-Enke Road in November, and a much bigger clubhouse at Southern Dunes in spring 2027.

I'm Mike, and I live here too. Below is the fall golf calendar, in order, with the fine print.

The Duke reopens, but confirm the exact day

The Duke is a par-72, 18-hole daily-fee course run by Sonoran Golf Group. Its own site calls it the centerpiece of the Rancho El Dorado master-planned community.

The reopening date depends on which page you read. The title of the overseeding event on The Duke's calendar says "REOPEN 10/12 at 6am." The description of that same event says Oct. 11 at 6 a.m. The Arizona Golf Association's statewide 2026 overseeding schedule lists The Duke as closed 9/28 and reopening 10/13. So you've got three dates for one opening. Treat Oct. 12 as the likely day and call the pro shop before you load the clubs, especially if you want an early tee time on the 11th.

When it reopens, the Grill reopens with it. The Grill's posted hours are:

  • Monday through Wednesday: bar 6 a.m. to 5 p.m., food 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Thursday through Sunday: bar 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., food 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Happy hour: Monday through Thursday, 2 to 5 p.m.
  • Fish fry: Fridays, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The page says hours are subject to change. You don't need a tee time to get to the Friday fish fry, though.

The Gold Card math changes in October

If you carry The Duke's Gold Card, here's something easy to miss this month. You earn one point for every dollar you spend on your own green fees at Sonoran Golf Group courses, which are The Duke and Ahwatukee Lakes, and you can trade points for free rounds. The redemption cost depends on the season.

The Duke free round Peak season, October to May 4 Off-season, May 5 to overseed
Any day 1,200 points 700 points
Twilight 600 points 400 points

October is the start of peak season, so a standard free round at The Duke now costs 500 more points than it did over the summer. The peak-season twilight round, at 600 points, costs less than an off-season standard round. If you've been saving points, a twilight round goes furthest from now through early May. Free rounds have to be booked on Gold Card tee times no more than seven days out.

Oct. 12 to 30: Southern Dunes is closed

On the morning The Duke reopens, Ak-Chin Southern Dunes shuts its course. The Arizona Golf Association schedule shows it closed 10/12/2026 and reopening 10/30/2026. Arroyo Grille, the restaurant there, posts its own overseed closure of Oct. 12 through 29.

If you play Southern Dunes, this weekend, before the closure, is your last chance at summer pricing. Its Summer Steal package ran $579 for 10 championship rounds, with $29 rates Monday through Thursday and $39 Friday through Sunday, and it was valid through Oct. 11. When the course reopens, it uses dynamic pricing that can change daily with demand. Listed green fees include a shared cart, and a single-rider cart costs a $100 surcharge when one is available.

So from Oct. 12 until Southern Dunes reopens on the 30th, The Duke is the one of these two courses you can play. If your regular group splits time between them, that's the stretch to book at The Duke.

Two dates to check before you book

The Duke's October calendar lists a CUSD boys high school tournament on Oct. 22 and a CUSD boys high school event on Oct. 23, plus a Phoenix Golf Association shotgun on Oct. 31. The calendar doesn't say how much of the course each event uses. If you want a tee time on one of those days, check availability before you plan the morning around it.

Mid-November: golf after dark on Smith-Enke Road

The next opening isn't a golf course. Back Nine Golf is putting a 24/7 indoor golf simulator at 41724 W. Smith-Enke Road. As of Sept. 22, the simulators were expected to be installed by the end of October, with a soft launch before a mid-November grand opening. Those are targets, not promises, so watch for an official date.

Father and son Danny and Parker Hunsaker own the franchise. You'll be able to pay by the hour or sign up for a membership. Members get round-the-clock access, which Parker Hunsaker pitched to people working graveyard or late shifts. He also said, "I want to stop leaving town to do this kind of thing."

He told InMaricopa he hopes Back Nine can work alongside Southern Dunes and The Duke at Rancho El Dorado as the city grows. That fits the calendar. Overseeding comes back every fall and takes one course out at a time. A simulator doesn't close for grass, and it doesn't care if it's dark at 6 p.m. in December.

Spring 2027: Southern Dunes gets a bigger clubhouse

The temporary clubhouse at Southern Dunes is there because of construction. The Ak-Chin Indian Community is building a new clubhouse and event facility that costs more than $20 million. Site work started in February 2026, and vertical construction was expected to begin in March. In the meantime, Arroyo Grille is serving from the temporary clubhouse and an "On The Go" food trailer. The trailer opens at 10 a.m. and stays open until the last golfer on Mondays and Tuesdays, and until 9 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.

The plans include:

  1. A contemporary food hall and a bigger Arroyo Grille
  2. Private dining rooms and a banquet room
  3. A larger golf shop and a bridal suite
  4. An indoor simulator room with a GOLFZON simulator, which doubles as a groomsmen's lounge during weddings

A July 17, 2026 construction update from AZBEX said the building will nearly double, from 11,300 to 23,600 square feet. It also mentioned a new 7,600-square-foot putting green expected to open in September, and a clubhouse soft opening planned for spring 2027. The project's earlier press release rounded the size to 24,000 square feet. I haven't seen confirmation that the putting green actually opened in September, so check before you count on it.

When the new clubhouse opens, Maricopa will have two places to hit an indoor simulator, one on Smith-Enke Road and one at Southern Dunes.

Your fall golf plan in order

  1. Now through about Oct. 11: The Duke is closed. Southern Dunes is open, and Summer Steal rates run through Oct. 11.
  2. Oct. 12: The Duke likely reopens at 6 a.m., so call ahead. Southern Dunes closes the same day.
  3. Oct. 12 to 29: Play The Duke, keeping Oct. 22, 23 and 31 in mind. Gold Card holders get the most out of twilight redemptions at 600 points.
  4. Oct. 30: Southern Dunes reopens with dynamic pricing.
  5. Mid-November: Back Nine Golf's expected grand opening on Smith-Enke Road.
  6. Spring 2027: Planned soft opening of the new Southern Dunes clubhouse.
