From one vet to another..

Arizona Veteran Benefits

If you're a veteran (or a veteran's family) thinking about Arizona, there's a lot to like here. As an Army vet myself, here's a plain-English rundown of the perks — education, employment, state taxes, housing, healthcare, and one entertainment benefit a lot of vets don't even know exists.

A quick note before the list

I served six years in the Army (got out in 2015), so this is one I care about. Fair warning: your mileage varies — almost every program below has different qualification levels depending on your discharge, disability rating, Purple Heart status, and so on. I'll keep this to the basics; reach out with your specifics and I'll at least point you to the right place.

Education

The federal GI Bill is the heavy hitter and hard to beat — check your eligibility at va.gov. Arizona layers on a few extras: a Purple Heart tuition waiver that can cover 100% of tuition at Arizona state schools (community colleges and universities) for eligible recipients, in-state residency for tuition if you're stationed here, and honorary diplomas for veterans of certain eras. Because these stack in nuanced ways, talk to a benefits expert about combining them.

Employment

Arizona (like the federal government) gives veterans priority hiring — including bonus points on qualifying exams — plus priority job services through the Department of Economic Security, veteran-specific job fairs, and a lot of employers who prioritize hiring vets (partly thanks to tax incentives). If you're used to working with or around the government, the transition tends to be smoother.

State taxes (a real one)

Arizona does not tax military retirement pay, VA disability payments, or active-duty pay at the state level — so your income goes further. If you have a disability rating, you may also qualify for a property-tax discount (contact your county assessor) and a meaningful vehicle-registration discount. My honest advice: tell people you're a veteran — in education, employment, taxes, registration — and you'll be surprised what comes out of the woodwork. These systems exist to thank you; use them.

Housing: the VA loan

This is the big one for me. The VA home loan is a phenomenal way into a home: it waives the down payment, the funding fee can be waived (with a disability rating) or rolled into the loan, there's no loan limit if you qualify, and the VA sets no minimum credit score (lenders set their own). With closing costs often negotiated onto the seller, you can sometimes buy with essentially nothing out of pocket. One caution: get your Certificate of Eligibility straight from va.gov, and be wary of slick outfits that brand themselves “veteran-friendly” but charge higher rates. For the full walk-through — eligibility, the termite/window/MPR/CAIVRS quirks, and getting matched with a VA-savvy lender — see my VA loans in Maricopa page.

Healthcare & community

Arizona has a high concentration of veterans and strong support to match. There are VA medical facilities across the Phoenix metro (Maricopa itself doesn't have one — the nearest is about 25–30 minutes in Casa Grande), but most of my own VA care is now telehealth, which is genuinely convenient. Locally you'll also find the American Legion, VFW, and a Maricopa Veteran Center that can help with things like VA claims.

The hidden gem: Vet Tix

Save this one: Vet Tix (vettix.org) is a nonprofit that gives veterans free or deeply discounted event tickets — concerts, sports, comedy, family shows, you name it — for just a small processing fee (usually ~$10–15). We've grabbed seats for a fraction of face value (a $35–40 show for about $11 a person). It works nationwide and is shockingly underused. If you do nothing else on this list, sign up.

Arizona veteran benefits, answered

Does Arizona tax military retirement or disability pay?

No - Arizona does not tax military retirement pay, VA disability payments, or active-duty pay at the state level, so more of your income stays with you. Veterans with a disability rating can also get property-tax discounts (contact your county assessor) and discounts on vehicle registration.

What education benefits do Arizona veterans get?

On top of the federal GI Bill, Arizona adds its own perks - notably a Purple Heart tuition waiver that can cover 100% of tuition at Arizona state schools (community colleges and universities) for eligible recipients, in-state residency for tuition purposes if you're stationed here, and honorary diplomas for veterans of certain eras. Check your GI Bill eligibility at va.gov, and verify the Arizona-specific programs with a benefits expert since they're nuanced.

Can a veteran buy a home in Arizona with no money down?

Often yes. The VA home loan waives the down-payment requirement. There's a funding fee, but it can be waived if you have a disability rating - or rolled into the loan. Closing costs (and any buyer-agent fee) are negotiable and frequently paid by the seller, so the net can be close to $0 out of pocket. There's no VA loan limit if you qualify, and the VA sets no minimum credit score (individual lenders set their own, often around 580-620). See my dedicated VA-loan page for the details and the quirks.

Is Arizona a good state for veterans?

Yes - it's long been a veteran-friendly state, with a high concentration of veterans, priority hiring (including bonus points on qualifying exams), real tax breaks, and strong community support (American Legion, VFW, and the Maricopa Veteran Center, which can help with VA claims). Most VA healthcare is now available via telehealth, and there are VA medical facilities across the Phoenix metro.

What is Vet Tix?

Vet Tix (vettix.org) is a nonprofit that gives veterans free or deeply discounted tickets to events - concerts, sports, comedy, family shows, and more - for just a small processing fee (typically around $10-15). It's one of the most underused veteran perks out there; my family has gotten great seats for a fraction of face value. It works nationwide, not just in Arizona.
